Columbia University Irving Medical Center is committed to fostering and enhancing a diverse faculty. The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion at CUIMC offers resources and programs that aim to support the needs of its diverse faculty. It also partners with other offices, the Columbia University Office of the Vice Provost for Advancement, and the Office of Work/Life, to offer special lectures, professional development programs, resources, and networking opportunities.
General Career Advancement
The CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty (LMC)
The CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty is a four-day program designed for faculty who currently have leadership/management responsibilities or who wish to include these in their career goals. Participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary for current and future leadership positions in the academic health sciences by utilizing active learning methods, including case studies, discussion and the development of a personal project. The Mid-Career Faculty Development Series
Mid-career faculty often find themselves at a crossroads after achieving the landmark steppingstone of a promotion. There may be fewer mentors and support mechanisms available to help guide their career development, and choices they face are broader and more complex. This series is designed for those faculty, and covers topics such as understanding and navigating a broader range of career changes, pathways to leadership, leadership competencies, and negotiation.

"Ask COAP" Series - Strategies for Promotion and Tenure
The "Ask COAP" Series provides faculty with the opportunity to hear directly from the faculty chairs of the Committees on Appointments and Promotion who oversee appointments, promotions, and tenure. Speakers provide strategies, guidance, and best practices for faculty advancement.

Mentee/Mentor Training Programs
Mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching are essential to both training and career advancement in scientific and biomedical fields. The Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Science and the CUIMC Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity, and Inclusion have created the PriME: Pathway to Mentoring Series —a five-part program designed to equip mentors with the skills to navigate the "hidden curriculum" of mentorship. This curriculum includes the unspoken norms and expectations critical to successful mentoring relationships, such as interpersonal skills, professional development, and fostering workforce well-being.

The CUIMC Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning (SITL)
The annual Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning is a two day workshop devoted to exploring effective teaching and learning strategies in health sciences education. This event is designed for junior faculty or senior faculty who have recently taken on a new teaching role. More information.
The CUIMC Educator Development Certificate (CEDC)
The CUIMC Educator Development Certificate of participation program is an evidence-based, faculty- driven, professional development series for educators (clinician-educators).

GRANTWISE SERIES
Applying for funding can be a complicated process given the ever-changing policy requirements and the ever-increasing number of required components in an application.
The goals of the GRANTWISE Series are to provide grantsmanship tips that are applicable to all applications as well as provide an overview of NIH grant opportunities that are specific to early stage investigator (ESI) faculty and trainees.
The info sessions also cover best practices for working with your administrators and guide participants to resources for preparing an application and managing an award. Each session is typically held once a year. Click here to learn more.
GRANTWISE - "Writing Specific Aims"
The GRANTWISE series covers all you need to know about writing successful NIH grants.
The most vital section of any NIH grant application is the Specific Aims section. This section is the master plan and central focus of an NIH research grant and is a key part that all reviewers read. This workshop provides insight into the elements of an effective and strong Specific Aims section.
Participants are asked to bring a draft of their Specific Aims with them and work through the session on developing this draft.

Virginia Kneeland Frantz Society (VKFS) for Women Faculty Annual Lecture
The Virginia Kneeland Frantz Society for Women Faculty offers a variety of faculty-driven programs and opportunities that target the specific needs of women faculty. Among these programs, the VKFS annual lecture provides the entire CUIMC community with the opportunity to hear directly from women leaders from a variety of professional fields on their perspectives on and experiences with success and leadership.

John Lindenbaum Memorial Lecture Series
Dr. John Lindenbaum was a widely acclaimed hematologist, gifted teacher, great mentor and an integral part of then Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. His interests went well beyond medicine. He cared deeply about societal inequities and injustices and in medicine in particular. Just before his death in June 1997, he bestowed a gift to what is now Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to establish an annual lecture given by a distinguished diverse scientist. This lecture series has provided the VP&S community with the opportunity to host diverse scientists from all over the country, while honoring his commitment to equality and justice in medicine and society at large.

Born out Columbia’s KL2 Mentored Career Development Award, they are highly motivated to support the development of the peer experiences for academic teams. Their mission is to provide peer coaching for advancement of gender and racial equity among academic research faculty and leadership. In partnership with the CUIMC Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity and Inclusion and in collaboration with other services and experts on campus, the ASPIRE! Peer-Mentoring Series - Managing it All: Research, Clinical, and Life Priorities During the COVID-19 Pandemic was born to support clinician-science faculty during an exceptionally challenging time in their academic careers.
