NFL Raises Voices of Columbia Heart Transplant Patients
After Sam Prince received a heart transplant at Columbia at age 8, he’s been working to increase the number of people who register to donate organs. He has raised awareness through fundraising, outreach, and his relationship with the New York Giants. NFL Media recently profiled Sam and another Columbia heart transplant patient after the two were connected by Columbia pediatric transplant cardiologists Drs. The Columbia University Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research has recognized several CUIMC faculty members as Mentors of the YearDelivette Castor, PhD, Medicine, received the Junior Mentor of the Year Award, and Rebecca Schnall, PhD, Nursing; Jennifer J. Manly, PhD, Neurology; and Cristiane S. Duarte, PhD, Psychiatry, all received Senior Mentor of the Year Awards.

Stephanie Lovinksy Desir, MD, Pediatrics in VP&S, and Virginia Rauh, ScD, Population and Family Health in Mailman, have been appointed to the EPA Children's Health Protection Advisory Committee for 2023-2026.

A study led by Columbia Psychiatry and Mailman School of Public Health researchers was selected as winner of the 2023 European Psychiatric Association’s Research Prize for the best scientific paper of the year. Co-authors include Melanie Wall, PhD; Lisa Dixon, MD; Roberto Lewis-Fernandez, MD; Ezra Susser, MD, DrPH; and Michael Compton, MD.

Dec 6, 2022 - Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez is a pediatrician at Columbia University in New York and the mother of a 14-month-old son who had to be taken to the hospital earlier this year to be treated for pneumonia after having a viral illness. "It was really, really scary," Bracho-Sanchez told "Good Morning America" of her son William's illness, from which he eventually recovered.

But with flu cases skyrocketing, it’s important to get vaccinated if you're pregnant for a number of reasons, says Zork, a high-risk obstetrician and an assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “Flu causes more severe disease in pregnant people,” Zork tells TODAY.com.
