Meet Dr. Daichi Shimbo
Dr. Shimbo is a highly regarded physician-scientist who has led groundbreaking interdisciplinary research that has advanced the understanding of how behavioral, psychosocial, and biological factors contribute to the increased cardiovascular disease risk associated with hypertension. Dr. Shimbo’s clinical expertise as a preventive cardiologist focuses on the precise diagnosis and effective treatment of hypertension, and the evaluation of cardiovascular manifestations related to hypertension. He has co-authored multiple national and international guidelines, scientific statements, and policy statements in cardiovascular disease and hypertension.
In addition to his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Shimbo plays a key role in faculty affairs at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He works closely with leadership across Columbia’s four health science schools—the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mailman School of Public Health, College of Dental Medicine, and School of Nursing—to support faculty policies, advancement, and professionalism. His responsibilities include overseeing faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure processes; managing professional development, compliance, and training including conflict-of-interest; and ensuring professionalism in faculty conduct. Additionally, he directs operations for the International Students and Scholars Office in collaboration with the Office of the Provost.
Dr. Shimbo also serves as co-director of the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, where he provides both scientific and administrative leadership. He oversees the TRaining And Nurturing Scholars FOr Research that is Multidisciplinary (TRANSFORM) program, an interdisciplinary career development initiative supporting predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior and mid-career faculty. This includes leading programs such as the KL2 Career Development Program and the Irving Scholars Award Program.
Dr. Shimbo’s dedication to education and mentorship has been recognized with several awards, including the Provost’s Senior Faculty Teaching Scholar Award, Daniel V. Kimberg Memorial Junior Faculty Teaching Award, and the Medical Housestaff Teaching Award.
