SPIRIT Book Club: Discussion Session #3 (p. 264-367)
This spring, we will be hosting a book club spotlighting the book When Crack Was King: A People’s History of a Misunderstood Era by Donovan X. Ramsey. In this book, Donovan X. Ramsey traces the path from the last triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement to the devastating realities we live with today: a racist criminal justice system, continued mass incarceration and gentrification, and increased police brutality. Weaving together riveting research with the voices of survivors, When Crack Was King is a crucial reevaluation of the era and a powerful argument for providing historically violated communities with the resources they deserve.
This discussion will be the second of three meetings for this book. If you plan to attend and participate, please read chapters in Act VII through Act VIII (p. 264-367).
The author, Donovan X. Ramsey, will also be joining us for an in-person Q&A. If you have any questions, please submit them through this form. This event is open to all CUID holders (including those who have not read the book)!
Please feel free to forward this invite to anyone who’s interested in participating. Hope to see you all on May 9th!
