Reminder: Upload Vaccination Status to the ReopenCU App

NYC's Hometown Heroes Parade Honors Front-Line Workers
On July 7, nearly two dozen members of the CUIMC family marched down Manhattan's Canyon of Heroes in a ticker-tape parade honoring essential workers and all who served on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. Read more.

VP&S Study: How Premature Birth Affects Respiratory Health in Newborns
Premature birth impairs the stem cells in babies' upper airways, which may contribute to further respiratory complications, a study from VP&S researchers has found. Read more.

Life Science Accelerator Pilot Awards Announced
Twelve Columbia research teams received Columbia Life Science Accelerator pilot grants for their creative and inventive lab-to-market projects that aim to change the way patients are treated or diagnosed. Read more.

GRANTS

VAGELOS COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS

Jason Krellman, PhD, Neurology, will receive $694,532 over one year from the National Institute on Aging for a subaward of “Social Convoys, Cognitive Reserve and Resilience, and Risk for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.”

Jennifer Lue, MD, Medicine, will receive $729,000 over five years from the American Cancer Society for “Targeting MYD88 Mutated Lymphomas with a Novel IRAK4 Degrader Platform.”

Nathalie Moise, MD, Medicine, will receive $354,328 over one year from the National Institute of Mental Health for “StepWell: Stepped Care Mental Health and Substance Use Telehealth Services for COVID-19 Affected Patients.”

Elvira Parravicini, MD, Pediatrics, will receive $1,000,000 over one year from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for “Neonatal Comfort Care Program.”

Danish Saleheen, MBBS, PhD, Medicine, will receive $405,000 over five years from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for a subaward of “Whole-Genome Sequencing Analysis of Coronary Atherosclerosis and Related Traits.”

Neil Shneider, MD, PhD, Neurology, will receive $551,579 over five years from the Target ALS Foundation Inc for “Biofluids Core Grant.”

AWARDS AND HONORS

VAGELOS COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS

William “Clinton” Erwin, MD, Surgery, has received the John Jones Fellowship for 2021-22 from the John Jones Surgical Society for his research on “Mechanisms of Acute Myocardial Injury and Chronic Damage to the Cardiovascular System in COVID-19 Patients” with the mentorship of Giovanni Ferrari, PhD, Surgery.

Megan Sykes, MD, Medicine, will receive the European Society for Organ Transplantation’s “ESOT Honorary Membership” Award during the society’s biennial congress in August. The award recognizes the outstanding medical and scientific contribution of ESOT members in the field of organ transplantation.
