CUIMC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Columbia University Irving Medical Center recognized Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration on Haven Plaza for students, faculty, staff, and community members on Oct. 9.
Sponsored by the Office of Academic and Community Partnerships and the LatinX Employee Resource Group, the event provided attendees the opportunity to learn more about Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the accomplishments made by the Hispanic community.
The theme of this year’s national celebration was “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
Participants enjoyed traditional Hispanic food, including empanadas, arepas and buñuelos, as well as dancing and live music from the Harold O. Levy School 52 marching band. The festival encouraged attendees to continue the celebration by supporting local Hispanic-owned restaurants.
Members of the CUIMC community also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a reception recognizing National Latino Physician Day on Oct. 1. at the Faculty Club. The Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Latino Association invited attendings, trainees, and medical students to connect, celebrate, and build relationships with colleagues across different fields. The event was also attended by representatives for Mayor Eric Adams and Governer Kathy Hochul, who presented signed proclamations recognizing Oct.1 as “Latino Physican Day” in New York City and New York state.
