Billing Compliance Plan
The Columbia University Billing Compliance Plan(link is external and opens in a new window) is intended to demonstrate our commitment to the highest standards of ethics and legal and regulatory compliance. The elements of the Plan generally include establishing compliance and practice standards to prevent erroneous or fraudulent conduct, communicating the standards to employees, responding to detected violations, enforcing disciplinary standards, developing open lines of communication, monitoring and auditing, and maintaining an environment that supports our compliance plan.
Billing Compliance Manual
CUIMC's Billing Compliance Plan applies to all CUIMC physicians, faculty, entities, corporations, administrative personnel, clinical research staff, and other health professionals involved in the provision of professional services.
The Billing Compliance Manual is intended to summarize, for ease of use and reference, the compliance principles and organizational structure set forth in the Billing Compliance Plan and applicable Federal and State laws and regulations. The Manual is also intended to update, amplify, and explain certain requirements and processes at the University, and to cross-reference related legal and institutional requirements, including policies of Columbia Doctors.
Attestation
The Compliance Steering Committee requires that each member of the clinical faculty be familiar with the Compliance Plan, the principles of which are summarized below, and sign an attestation at the time of appointment/reappointment.
It is the responsibility of the billing physician or other health professional to ensure that appropriate documentation supports the bill being submitted.

Templates
Each CUIMC Department is required by the Compliance Plan to have a departmental plan. Departmental specific information is housed under the ir plan, such as coding, or auditing schedules.. These departmental plans are for a two year period and updated at the end of the second year.
