What You Need to Know About Graduation Ceremonies at the Medical Center

It’s graduation season at Columbia University, and the four schools of Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) are gearing up for ceremonies next week.

Columbia’s schools each have their own ceremonies in addition to a single commencement ceremony for all University graduates. That University ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on the Morningside campus. Below are the dates, information about speakers, and links for where you can watch each CUIMC school’s commencement livestream:

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S)

When: 2 p.m. Wednesday at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory Foundation, 216 Fort Washington Ave.

Keynote speaker: Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, the Nanaline H. Duke Professor of Pediatrics, dean emerita of the School of Medicine, and vice chancellor emerita for academic affairs at Duke University.

Number of graduates: 172 students will receive MD degrees from VP&S; 60 students will receive PhD degrees from the Coordinated Doctoral Programs in Biomedical Sciences in Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Columbia University School of Nursing

When: 10 a.m. Tuesday at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory Foundation, 216 Fort Washington Ave.

Keynote speaker: Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, director of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a component of the National Institutes of Health.

Number of graduates: 330 students are eligible to participate in the ceremony (includes graduates from February, May and October 2019). This year, 27 students will receive the school’s first master of science in advanced clinical management and leadership.

How to watch: The school will livestream the ceremony on its Facebook page starting 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM)

When: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory Foundation, 216 Fort Washington Ave.

Keynote speaker: Caswell A. Evans, CDM’70, MPH, associate dean for prevention and public health sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry.

Number of graduates: 79 students will receive DDS degrees.

Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

When: 4 p.m. Tuesday at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory Foundation, 216 Fort Washington Ave.

Keynote speaker: Former Vice President Al Gore.

Number of graduates: 699 students will graduate, 659 with master’s degrees and 40 with doctoral degrees.
