Summer Institute in Narrative Medicine

Columbia University’s Program in Narrative Medicine and the American Medical Student Association are co-sponsoring an intensive Summer Institute in Narrative Medicine, June 16–20, 2014. This is the first national institute to be offered to medical students and premedical students by the founding faculty of the narrative medicine program.

The institute is designed for medical students, premed undergraduates, and students from other health care fields who want to develop knowledge and skill in narrative medicine. The five-day institute will include keynote lectures and small-group training sessions in the fundamentals of narrative approaches to clinical care.

Students at the institute will receive intensive training in close reading, creative writing, and reflective practice. They also will participate in hands-on creative projects in the visual arts, performance art, and multi-media and enjoy New York City’s rich resources in the visual arts, music, and theater.

The institute, to take place on Columbia University’s Morningside Campus, will be taught by leaders in interdisciplinary education and team-building, including students, graduates, and faculty from Columbia’s master's degree program in narrative medicine.
