Dear Colleagues,

It is with deep sadness that we write to announce the passing of Richard Deckelbaum, the Robert R. He was internationally renowned for his decades of work at Columbia, which included his pioneering research on lipid disorders and a tireless dedication to global health. His impressive academic productivity included hundreds of publications and continuous grant funding.

Dr. Deckelbaum spent much of his career promoting health in communities across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. His talent as a researcher and as an advocate for global health was a rare combination that has inspired students and colleagues.

Dr. Deckelbaum taught, mentored, and supported generations of students, fellows, and faculty members who will remember him as brilliant, empathetic, thoughtful, kind, and fun. He exemplified a model academic physician, excelling in research, mentorship, and leadership. After more than 30 years of service at this institution, his impact on the division of gastroenterology, the Institute of Human Nutrition, and across Columbia University will always be remembered.
