P&S Class of 2017 Begins Major Clinical Year
Members of the P&S Class of 2017 made the transition to their major clinical year during the Jan. 5 Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician’s Ceremony. The class has 184 students who will now continue their education by working with and learning from house staff and faculty members directly involved in patient care. Another three Class of 2017 members who participated in the ceremony will begin their major clinical year in January 2016.
The ceremony, a P&S tradition since 1998, marks the students’ transition from classroom instruction to learning in clinical settings, including hospital and outpatient locations.
The ceremony is also a time when students who have completed their major clinical year honor residents and faculty for excellent teaching. Awards also are given to students for preclinical work. Other traditions of the ceremony include a student-produced video and recitation of the Hippocratic Oath, which the class first recited at its White Coat Ceremony in August 2013 at the beginning of medical school.
Resident Teaching Awards: The Class of 2016 presented Arnold P. Gold Foundation’ Resident Teaching Awards to six house staff teachers: Kaylan Christianer, NYP, Medicine; Christopher Deibert, NYP, Urology; Erika Marulanda-Londono, NYP, Neurology; Geoff Rubin, NYP, Medicine; Devin Smith, NYP, Obstetrics-Gynecology; and Bhuvana Sunil, Harlem Hospital, Pediatrics. Other residents who were nominated were recognized for their commitment to teaching with a place in the Circle of Excellence: Colby Chapman, NYP, Neurology; Rohan Goswami, Stamford Hospital, Medicine; Anne Holland-Pike, NYP, OB-GYN; Jake Kriegel, NYP, Surgery; and Ellis Rochelson, NYP, Pediatrics.
Humanism in Patient Care: The Gold Humanism Honor Society chapter at P&S created an award, first given in 2014, to honor non-physician members of the medical care team who demonstrate qualities of humanism and make important contributions to the medical student experience. The awards this year were presented to Ashley Boyers, a labor and delivery nurse at Stamford Hospital; Ray Jean-Baptiste, an ER nurse at Stamford Hospital; and Florence Leighton, a psychiatric nurse at NYP.
Faculty Awards: The Class of 2016 honored Cyril Sahyoun, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, with the Major Clinical Year Outstanding Teacher Award. The Class of 2017 presented the Fundamentals Outstanding Teacher Award to Rita Carney, MD, instructor in pathology & cell biology.
Student Awards: Among the Class of 2017, Adam M. Butensky received the Greg Grove Award for promoting activities that provide relaxation for busy students, and Jennifer Ding and Thomas R. Graf received Karl H. Perzin Excellence in Pathology Awards.
The Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician’s Ceremony is named for a 1984 P&S graduate who became a beloved pediatrician and teacher at P&S. He was the Arnold P. Gold Associate Professor of Pediatrics and director of pediatric emergency medicine and the pediatrics clerkship when he died in a plane crash in 2004. He led regional and national workshops for the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which supports the transition ceremony and other events that promote humanism in medicine.
