NY-Presbyterian Hospital's Innovation Center Opens at Blueprint Health Accelerator
First collaboration of its kind in New York City will foster innovation and technology projects
NEW YORK, NY (July 22, 2014)—NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) has opened dedicated innovation space at Blueprint Health, a New York City-based accelerator and co-working space for health tech startups. This new space will help foster the hospital’s collaboration with the technology and startup sector in New York City and bring new technologies into use at NYP. The first component of NYP's nascent Innovation Center, the site at Blueprint Health, will focus on developing a portfolio of technology projects, including building on applications from the hospital’s recent hackathon, expanding existing initiatives such as award-winning patient bedside tablets, and developing new solutions in conjunction with Blueprint Health’s members.
NYP, which will maintain full-time workspace at Blueprint Health, will offer opportunities for startups affiliated with the accelerator to pilot and scale projects with one of New York's largest hospital systems; participate in mentoring programs with NYP's doctors, researchers, and health care experts; and work alongside a pool of talented technologists developing clinical and patient engagement technology.
“At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation," said Aurelia Boyer, senior vice president and chief information officer at NYP. “To consistently deliver the best care for our patients, we need to develop forward-thinking technology and build applications that are both sustainable and scalable. We also know that New York City is a growing hub for technology innovation in health care, and collaborating with the companies and technologists from Blueprint Health will help NYP deliver innovation more rapidly and with a fresh, entrepreneurial spirit. We could not be more excited about this collaboration and look forward to providing more engaging experiences for our patients.”
"Innovation at NewYork-Presbyterian is centered on rapid, scalable, sustainable, mobile, and measurable ideas,” said Dr. Peter Fleischut, associate chief innovation officer at NYP. “Working closely with Blueprint and its members will allow us to quickly find and build solutions that meet the needs of our staff and patients and redefine the way we use technology at the hospital.”
“With more than 50 health care companies sharing our space, Blueprint Health has become a center of gravity for NYC health tech, and we’re excited to have the NYP Innovation Center join us at the loft. We’re eager to work with their team to create new opportunities for startups to engage with one of the top providers in the country and, together, strengthen the ecosystem here in New York,” said Michael Maggio, director at Blueprint Health.
The NYP Innovation Center will advance a variety of technology projects, including the series of InnovateNYP initiatives. In March, NYP hosted InnovateNYP, the first New York City hospital hackathon, to spur excitement and creativity in the local tech community. Dr. Brad Weinberg, co-founder of Blueprint Health, served as a judge at the hackathon. Additionally, NYP hosted the first InnovateNYP Listening Session at Blueprint Health to gather feedback from its members and discuss health care innovation with the tech sector. Building on the success of the hackathon and listening session, NYP recently launched a website (innovatenyp.org) to make it easier for entrepreneurs to share their ideas with the hospital. Later this year, Boyer will announce a challenge geared towards NYP medical residents and nurses to help generate ideas to improve the workplace.
