New Leaders Named at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

(NEW YORK, NY)  – Dr. Lee Goldman, dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine, and EVP for health and biomedical sciences at Columbia University Medical Center, issued the following statement in response to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s announcement that Dr. Steven J. Corwin will be the hospital’s new CEO and Dr. Robert E. Kelly will become the hospital’s new president in September.

As you may have already heard, the Board of Trustees of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has named Steven J. Corwin, MD, as the hospital’s new Chief Executive Officer and Robert E. Kelly, MD, as the hospital’s new President, each taking their new roles in September, when Herbert Pardes, MD, retires from his role as President and CEO and transitions to Executive Vice Chairman of the hospital’s board.

I want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Herb Pardes, both personally and on behalf of everyone at Columbia University, for his leadership of the hospital — and before that, of what is now CUMC. He has been a great partner for over the past five years, and the growth of our clinical and clinical research enterprise has represented a true team effort. Herb's achievements, including the successful merger of New York and Presbyterian Hospitals, are innumerable, and his impact on health care in New York City and beyond will be lasting.

I have had the pleasure of working with Steve Corwin for the past five years in his capacity as NewYork-Presbyterian’s EVP and COO. I cannot imagine a person better suited for the challenging and important role of CEO of our primary hospital affiliate. The hospital’s new generation of leaders are well known to all of us at CUMC, and I am confident that the productive relationship between our two institutions will become even stronger in the months ahead. Their track record makes them especially qualified to lead the hospital at a time of health care reform and its uncertainty.

Bob Kelly, the hospital’s top executive at NYP/CUMC, has been a wonderful partner in his leadership and oversight of the Milstein Hospital, the Allen Pavilion, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and other Northern Manhattan facilities.

The combined strengths of CUMC’s faculty and staff and the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital are a direct result of the synergy among discovery, education and patient care.  I know that both Drs. Corwin and Kelly share our vision of CUMC and NYP as the place for outstanding medical care — both for vulnerable individuals with no-place else to go and for people who can choose to go anywhere in the world.

Please join me in congratulating Drs. Corwin and Kelly on their new roles and in our joint goal of making CUMC and NYP the destination of choice for medical care, research and training.

Lee Goldman, MD
