#10 Bioengineered Skin Grafts

Similar to wrapping paper, engineered skin comes in flat pieces, which can be difficult and time-consuming to stitch together around an irregularly shaped body part. CUIMC bioengineers appear to have solved this problem by devising a way to grow engineered skin in complex, three-dimensional shapes. This makes it possible to construct, for example, a seamless “glove” of skin cells that can be easily slipped onto a severely burned hand. The researchers plan to test the grafts for human use.
#9 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize

The 2023 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize has been awarded to Zhijian ‘James’ Chen and Glen Barber for discovering the cGAS-STING pathway. Chen and Barber are the 112th and 113th winners of the Horwitz Prize, which is awarded annually by Columbia University for groundbreaking work in medical science. A ceremony for the award winners will be held in February, and Zhijian "James" Chen and Glen Barber will also present their work in lectures on Feb. 12.

#7 Ice Cream Social
July 21, 2023
To celebrate summer at CUIMC, employees and Washington Heights community members attended an ice cream social on Haven Plaza, enjoying free frozen fruit and ice cream bars. Leadership, including VP&S dean and CUIMC CEO Dr. Katrina Armstrong, as well as Columbia School of Nursing Dean Lorraine Frazier, handed out 4,500 frozen treats. The event also featured live jazz music.

The Columbia College of Dental Medicine welcomed and cloaked 84 students at its annual White Coat ceremony, symbolizing the transition into the medical field.

#4 Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician’s Ceremony

Students in the Class of 2025 at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons celebrated their transition from classroom-based instruction to clinical education with the Steven Z. Miller Student Clinician’s Ceremony on Jan. 6. The ceremony kicked off the second-year medical students’ transition to their Major Clinical Year, a series of rotations through hospital and ambulatory settings through the CUIMC/NewYork-Presbyterian system and affiliated hospitals.

Congratulations to the 140 members of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Class of 2027 who gathered for the White Coat Ceremony, an annual event at which Columbia’s incoming medical students are welcomed into the profession and cloaked in white coats by faculty members. This iconic rite of passage reinforces a commitment to compassion and excellence in patient care. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Arnold P. Gold White Coat Ceremony, named to honor the late Arnold P. Gold, MD, professor of neurology and pediatrics.

The annual White Coat Ceremony for the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons took place on August 11, 2023 and welcomed 140 members into the class of 2027. Students in the incoming class come from 33 states and 53 different undergraduate institutions. 9% of the incoming class were the first generation in their family to attend college.

On May 17, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons celebrated the Class of 2023’s graduation with friends and families. The ceremony honored 140 students who received MD degrees from the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons and 77 students who received PhD degrees in biomedical sciences from Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
