Columbia University Medical Center Names Thomas Jackiewicz Of Ucsd As New Chief Operating Officer

(New York, NY – Sept. 29, 2006) – Thomas Jackiewicz, MPH, will join Columbia University Medical Center in January as chief operating officer. He will work directly with Lee Goldman, M.D., executive vice president of Columbia University and dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. He is a graduate of Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.

Mr. Jackiewicz is currently associate vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Health Sciences, where he has been a key member of the senior health sciences management team. He managed a significant expansion during his tenure there, including planning and coordination of two major new structures for UCSD, a biomedical research building and a cancer center. He was also part of the executive management team that developed a new model for the UCSD medical center to consolidate inpatient activity at the La Jolla campus.

Previously, Dr. Jackiewicz held senior management positions at Stanford, Oregon Health Sciences and the University of Pennsylvania.

Columbia University Medical Center has an annual operating budget of $1.2 billion and $628 million in sponsored research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and individual foundations.

Prior to joining UCSD, Mr. Jackiewicz was senior associate chair for finance and administration in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, director of finance and administration in the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University, director of business and financial operations in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, and director of fiscal operations for the clinical practices of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Jackiewicz received a bachelor of business administration degree at the University of Georgia and a master degree in public health focused on health policy and management from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. He is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), where he is chair elect of the AAMC Group on Business Affairs.
