Speaker: Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., MPH, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Frieden’s targeted, aggressive public health strategies have made him one of the most effective health commissioners in the City’s history. Dr. Frieden will receive the Mailman School of Public Health's 2007 Dean’s Distinguished Service Award. He is a graduate of Columbia’s College of Physicians & Surgeons and Mailman School of Public Health.

Speaker: Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., Harvard University/Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Partners In Health (PIH). Dr. Farmer helped found the international health and social justice organization PIH in 1987. Farmer has been one of the driving forces that developed PIH from its small base in Cange in the Central Plateau of Haiti, into a worldwide health organization. In addition to treating some of the poorest people on earth, PIH through research, activism and a network of collaborations, has helped underserved people obtain effective drugs to treat TB and AIDS.

Speaker: John C. Hockenberry, an American journalist, who has won four Emmy awards and three Peabody Awards. Hockenberry is a regular commentator on the public radio program, “The Infinite Mind.” Hockenberry is a paraplegic.

Speaker: Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans, the trade association representing the nation's health maintenance organizations. Washingtonian Magazine named her one of the top three "Top Guns" of all trade association heads. Modern Healthcare magazine routinely ranks her among the 100 most powerful people in health care.

College of Dental Medicine Thursday, May 17, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Medical Center Garden (entrance on Ft. Washington Ave., between W. 165th and 168th Sts)

Speaker: Roy Lasky, executive director, New York State Dental Association. Mr. Lasky is credited with transforming this state association from a small operation to a thriving, modern association.
