COLUMBIA PRESBYTERIAN PRESENTING NEW APPROACHES TO
OBSTETRICS,
GYNECOLOGY, AND PEDIATRICS AT HEALTH SCIENCES ADVISORY
COUNCIL MEETING
Entertainer Jerry Lewis to receive council award for commitment
to fight against muscular dystrophy
WHAT: As part of its annual fall
meeting, the Columbia Presbyterian Health Sciences Advisory Council will
bring together
some of the medical center’s finest researchers and scholars in obstetrics,
gynecology, and pediatrics to discuss current
and future directions in health care for women and children. This half-day
symposium will include discussions on
advances in perinatal care, fetal and newborn cardiology, treating children
for disorders of the central nervous system,
and the current epidemic of childhood obesity and its link to diabetes.
The council also will present its semiannual Award for Distinguished Service
to Jerry Lewis for his outstanding
advocacy for finding a cure for muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular
disorders. Mr. Lewis has been an icon of
American entertainment since the 1940s. But since he hosted his first telethon
for the Muscular Dystrophy Association
of America in 1956, Mr. Lewis’ name has become synonymous with the telethons,
which have raised an awe-inspiring
$1.8 billion in pledges and contributions.
