Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center Opens Sun Center Of Excellence To Conduct Brain Research

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Research Center to Leverage Latest Technology to Improve Treatment and Make Possible Large, Multi-Center Collaborations in Brain Research

New York, NY – March 2003 - NewYork-Presbyterian has announced the opening of the Sun Center of Excellence at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and plaque presentation. The new center, which adds significant computational capability to the Columbia University Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Research Center, will seek to establish a collaborative and multi-investigator neuroimaging research environment focused primarily on education, medical applications, and the study of brain behavior and therapy-induced cortical changes, aimed at the systems of the brain that underlie cognition, perception and action. Additionally, the Center will seek to improve the scope, scale, and accessibility of functional brain imaging to clinical and research institutions around the world.

The Sun Center will be directed by Dr. Joy Hirsch, who is professor of radiology, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and director of the Columbia University Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Laboratory.
