Columbia Expert Discusses New Guidelines for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
A study by maternal-fetal medicine specialist Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, has led to changes in guidelines for preventing severe respiratory complications in babies born in the late preterm period (between 34 and 36 weeks of gestation). The study was presented in February at the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s 36th Annual Pregnancy Meeting.
On March 21, the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine issued a statement to help guide clinicians in how to implement the new intervention. The statement has been published online in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman is the Ellen Jacobson Levine and Eugene Jacobson Associate Professor of Women’s Health (in Obstetrics and Gynecology) at CUMC.
