Apply to Host a Student in Your Office for 2019 Summer Youth Employment Program

Offices throughout Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) are invited to host a local student through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). The medical center will welcome more than 100 SYEP students ages 16 to 21.

The program, coordinated by the CUIMC Office of Government & Community Affairs, gives participants valuable work experience and exposure to health sciences careers. Employees receive help on projects and the opportunity to mentor youth. “Working with SYEP students is often a gratifying experience,” said Sandra Harris, associate vice president for government and community affairs.

How to Apply

The program will run from July 8 through Aug. 16, 2019. There is no cost to departments to host a student. Youth participants, compensated by the city of New York, work from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Last summer, more than 65 CUIMC departments participated in the program. If your department or administrative office would like to participate, please complete this registration form and send it by email to gca@cumc.columbia.edu or interoffice mail to P&S Box 112. Alternatively, you may complete the form online. The deadline to apply is June 3, 2019. Write to gca@cumc.columbia.edu or call 212-305-8060 for more information.

“Please consider having an SYEP student join your team this summer,” Harris said. “Thanks to all those who have participated before and to those who plan to welcome students into their offices for the first time.”
