What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that restores function for a person who has been disabled or is experiencing pain due to a condition or injury, ranging from sports injuries (such as tennis elbow, spine disorders, and stroke) to other major disabling conditions. PM&R physicians treat both adults and children, often specializing in specific aspects of the field. Physiatry provides integrated, multidisciplinary care aimed at the recovery of the whole person, including physical, emotional, medical, vocational, and social needs. A doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation is called a physiatrist.
