What happens at a typical session at Columbia RunLab?

Sessions for individuals are held in the evenings from 5:00-8:30 PM. There are three to four runners per session.

After check-in, each runner will be ushered through a series of running-specific, evaluative stations where they will run on a treadmill, and perform relevant exercises and movements for the clinicians. Also included is a Functional Movement Screen, which helps identify limitations and asymmetries. This process utilizes state of the art technology and video analysis which provides detailed information on how the runner recruits specific muscles and adapts to various stages of running. Additionally, the information identifies the runner’s flight time, stride length, step length, cadence and foot strike.

Following this data collection period, all of the runners participate in a dynamic round table discussion. Here, the Columbia Programs in Physical Therapy faculty and doctoral students analyze each runner's form, strengths, weaknesses, and injury risk using video analysis and the data collected earlier in the evening. Based on the team’s diagnosis and observations, appropriately targeted home exercise interventions are recommended.
