Critical Care

  • Frailty and Phenotypes of ICU-Acquired weakness in Older ICU Survivors This is a single-center prospective cohort study of older (age ≥ 65 years) ICU survivors of respiratory failure, defined as a need for mechanical ventilation, from Columbia University Medical Center. We are making clinical measurements of frailty and weakness, and performing electro-physiologic studies of muscle and nerve function in the week prior to anticipated hospital discharge. This study begins to address 3 critical gaps in scientific knowledge regarding the prevalence, association with clinical measures of weakness and frailty, and long-term consequences of post-ICU neuromuscular dysfunction in the rapidly growing population of older ICU survivors of respiratory failure.
