Acute Respiratory Failure

Center for Acute Respiratory Failure And ECMO

ELSO platinum

ELSO Platinum Center of Excellence
1 of the first 3 adult programs in the world to achieve Platinum status

The Center for Acute Respiratory Failure treats adult patients who rapidly develop severe respiratory failure and may benefit from advanced interventions.

The Center offers expert consultation and management in the care of patients with acute respiratory failure as well as advanced services including:

  • Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Expert consultation in pulmonary and critical care
  • Pulmonary Vasodilator Theraphy
  • Pulmonary embolectomy and thromboendarterectomy

Patients that may benefit from our program typically develop respiratory failure from the following:

  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Pneumonia
  • Trauma
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, emphysema, or cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic thromboembolic disease

Transfers to the Center for Acute Respiratory Failure

Patients are accepted for transfer when the potential benefit of transfer outweighs the risk
For patients who may benefit from ECMO and are too unstable for transport to our center, we may elect to bring our team to the patient, place the patient on ECMO at the hospital where they are being cared for and transport them to our center with ECMO, via ambulance or aircraft, as needed.
