Q&A

Does Columbia have an AMCAS application?
Yes.
Can international students (non-permanent residents) apply and would they be funded?
We accept applications from students who are not U.S. citizens or who do not have permanent visa status, as long as they meet eligibility requirements set by the medical school. International applicants who are accepted would be funded as any other MSTP student.
How many applications do you receive each year?
We receive approximately 500 applications each year.
How many applicants do you interview?
Although it varies from year to year, approximately 100 applicants are invited to interview.
When are applicants informed of your decision?
Since we do not have rolling admissions, decisions are made only after all interviews have been completed. This process usually ends by February and we therefore aim to notify applicants of their status in early February.
If I am not accepted into the MD-PhD program, will I still be considered for medical school admissions?
When you come to interview, both medical school and MD-PhD program interviews are scheduled. The two programs make their decisions independently so that if you are not accepted into the MD-PhD program, you are still eligible for medical school admission.
Do you allow enrolled P&S medical students to transfer into the program?
We welcome applications from medical students who are currently in their first or second year at P&S.
What is the average class size?
We do not set limits on our class size. However, we aim to matriculate 12-15 students/year.
What is the annual stipend?
In addition, all school-related fees such as tuition and health insurance costs are paid for by the program. More about fees.
Am I required to do a laboratory rotation in the summer before medical school starts?
No. While we will happily accommodate you should you choose to do so, we also recognize the value in personal endeavors prior to starting the program.
Are there a minimum number of laboratory rotations I'm required to do?
If you have rotated in a lab and are committed to that lab, we do not require any additional rotations. However, most students will complete two rotations with the occasional student having three.
Can I earn my PhD in Chemistry or Biomedical Engineering?
Students can earn their PhD's in Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering. View a complete listing of all programs available to you.
What is the average duration of the program?
The program can be completed in as little as 6 years. However, most students require 7 or 8 years to complete the program.
